The Creation of Lusty’s Lagoon
A Taupō Experience in the Making
In 2014 Lloyd and Trish Lusty embarked upon a journey to bring a new and unique pool experience to Taupō. They wanted to provide their guests with the convenience of enjoying food and beverages in the pool itself with a new world-class lagoon style pool.
Lusty’s Lagoon was born and went on to become New Zealand’s first and only swim-up bar & café. The large, thermally heated lagoon style pool with its iconic swim up bar and café, swim in grotto cave, and a giant outdoor movie screen has become an iconic feature of the resort, offering year-round use and creating a destination within a destination.
The sheer size of Lusty’s Lagoon caters to family fun, secluded relaxation, swimming, exploring, a cold drink, sunbathing, lounging, talking, laughing, and meeting other friendly travellers.
The owners Lloyd & Trish Lusty partnered with ecoSprings, a world-class pool design and planning firm, to bring their dream to life. The pool was named Lusty’s Lagoon after the owners. It was built utilising a special patented Italian resin, and the operation was overseen by the Italian suppliers as this unique product had never been used in New Zealand.
The pool was constructed to the highest quality and standards following the motto: “If we are going to do it, let’s do it right!”
The entire project ran for 19 months, 14 months of which was dedicated to the construction of the pool itself.
Managing a project of this size was a big ask, but Lloyd & Trish were supported by both family and staff who all showed great dedication and flexibility.
The Official Grand Opening
The pool was opened in June 2016 and its significance as a cornerstone for the future of New Zealand tourism was reflected by the support of many dignitaries at the Official Grand Opening. Of particular note was the effort made by the Right Honourable John Key, Prime Minister at the time, to attend and officially open Lusty’s Lagoon.
Other attendees included the Honourable Louise Upston, Member of Parliament for Taupo; David Trewavas, Taupo Mayor; Fergus Brown, CEO of the NZ Holiday Parks Association; David Ovendale, CEO of TOP 10 Holiday Parks; as well as many other park owners, industry members, and local business leaders.
