Can’t think what to do when it gets WET? Well, there is no reason at all to sit around being bored on a rainy day! Within our Taupo holiday park there are a range of fun facilities and activities,including a Games Room with table foosball & air hockey. Or you can relax in our newly renovated TV room, with SKY on a 42" LCD TV. You will also find wireless broadband internet access on five computers and a small library. Hire a DVD. The thermally heated swimming is also a fun wet day activity! We also have a great movie theatre in Taupo town centre!

Full Day Activities In Taupo

White Water Rafting In Taupo

The Rangitaiki grade 3-4 white water rafting trip is a fun,full day adventure that takes you through the heavily wooded Kaingaroa Forest on the Rangitaiki River. This picturesque river has everything from raging rapids, to quiet peaceful glides over two hours of fast flowing action. This is Taupo’s most popular trip for expert and novice rafters alike. No need to worry about the rain when you are wearing a wetsuit!

Orakei Korako Kayak

Float down the scenic Waikato River in your kayak. Paddle through a gorge and past beds of water lilies to the lunch spot. Here you will use a natural boiling hot pool to cook your lunch. Then visit Orakei Korako, possibly the best thermal area in New Zealand and explore this isolated area which has remained almost completely unchanged for thousands of years. Wander through a hidden valley of colour, hot springs, gushing geysers and breathtaking natural beauty. See boiling mud and an extremely rare geothermal cave.

Fly Fishing In Taupo

For the serious fly fishing enthusiast, Taupo offers the best. We can organise day trips for novice and experienced fishers with one of our local guides. Our Rainbow Trout are legendary for their size and fighting capacity. Quad bike, four wheel drive or helicopter into our remote wilderness rivers. Our back country rivers open on October 1st and provide excellent fishing. Try nymphing before Christmas and our dry fly action can last until April. This is another awesome all weather activity in the Taupo area.

Kayak Lake Taupo

Northern Bays Kayak: Kayak out to the Maori Rock Carvings, mini inlets that can only harbour a kayak and Mason’s Rock.Mason’s Rock is a unique fan of volcanic rock emerging from Lake Taupo. Take a picnic and enjoy lunch on a secluded beach.

Western Bay Kayak: A beautiful kayaking trip based onthe shores of Lake Taupo. Around Kinloch and Kawakawa Bay there are 100m high cliffs to paddle under, a 3km beach, and an isolated natural harbour to visit, all with impenetrable bush, right up to the waterline.No roads, no cars, no buildings; you will be completely immersed in nature.

Quad Bikes

Spend a day playing in the mud with Taupo Quad Adventures.Wind your way through scenic native bush, enjoying spectacular native bush and views at the lookout on the two hour trip. Trails available for everyone - beginner to expert – we’ll be able to arrange an awesome day for you. Safaris ranging from one to three hours are available on the 4x 4 bikes, through exciting purpose built quad trails. For the more experienced riders, try the heartland adventure into the Tongariro Forest Park. With rivers and streams to cross and awesome scenery this is a very unique Taupo experience and a full one day ride.

Half Day Activities

Maori Carvings Kayak

Kayak out on Lake Taupo past steep cliffs and mini inlets that can only harbour a kayak, before sighting the 10m high Maori Rock Carvings. Visit a nearby rock ledge for snacks and a hot or cold drink and the opportunity to swim in the crystal clear waters of the lake.There is about three hours of paddling, so is great for the traveller with unlimited time. Then be dropped back at Lake Taupo Holiday Resort , for a soak in our thermally heated swimming pool .
Step back in time for a voyage of discovery as you cruise out to the Maori Rock Carvings with the Ernest Kemp, a replica steamboat. Alternatively, take the Cruise Cat and explore the Maori Rock Carvings and historical points of interest around the Lake. On a clear day the majestic volcanoes of Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro can be seen at the Southern end of the lake. Tea / coffee and snacks are always available, or alternatively take the Sunday Brunch Cruise which includes a full cooked breakfast.

White Water Rafting

The Tongariro River is one of New Zealand’s most famous. Its magic waters provide fun filled roller coaster riders with exhilarating rapids, crystal clear pools and breathtaking gorges. Grade 3 whitewater makes this one of the most popular trips for families. In two and a half hours you will navigate over 50 rapids! A leisurely one and a half hour float is also available for younger families. Full wet weather gear is provided.

Huka Falls River Cruise

Too wet for jet boating? Get awesome views of the Huka Falls from the Huka Falls River Cruise’s purpose built boat. Comfortable inside seating ensures a dry trip while the front viewing platform provides the ultimate photo opportunity. Cruise over crystal clear water and view bird life and native bush lined river banks. See natural hotstreams and the earth’s energy that drives the Wairakei Geothermal Power Station.

Trout Fishing

Take three or four hours off and go trout fishing on Lake Taupo. The waters of our beautiful, pristine lake offer excellent fishing all year round and Lake Taupo is arguably the best Rainbow Trout fishery in the world. Most fishing on the lake takes the form of trolling with lures or flies; no bait fishing is permitted. You can fish in all weather conditions in total comfort, with one of our local launches or catamarans. Our local guides will provide the perfect trip for you. Fishing is the only way to taste Taupo Trout, as they are not sold in restaurants.

Taupo Bungy boasts the world’s first cantilever platform, which extends out 47m over the mighty Waikato River. Try the highest water touch bungy in New Zealand. No matter about the rain for this Taupo activity, if you’re going to get wet anyway! Solo and tandem jumps available.

Visit Lava Glass and see the glass blowing process. Adjoining the studio is an extensive gallery of hand-blown art glass and jewellery where you can browse and buy part of the Lynden Over collection. Collections by local glass blower Chris Jones are also available for sale or viewing in the gallery. Visit the café onsite, which serves fresh homemade delectable food for morning tea, lunch and afternoon teas.
